Video: 2010 Reflections - So Long, Palm (and your funky, avant-bizare ads)

Palm, the innovative silicon valley shop which produced both the world's first blockbuster PDA (the Palm Pilot) and true smartphone (the Treo), went the way of the dodo bird in 2010. Their latest smartphone, the Pre, was a victim of the iPhone's success; Palm was acquired in 2010 by HP for a modest sum.

In remembrance of the firm that was -- and in remembering that there is definitely a line between creative and creepy advertising -- here are a few of the Pre's more memorable (to put it politely) television ads.

and for fun...

After realizing that Palm's fortune's were floundering, the company switched advertising gears in 2010 and produced the below one, featuring Mos Def's Quiet Dog Bit Hard.

What a difference! But would it have made a difference?

That is, would Palm's chances have been any better if they would have launched the Pre in 2009 with ads like the Mos Def one? Probably not.

Palm's best hope was lost during the six month delay between announcing the Pre in Jan. 2009 to very receptive CES buzz, and shipping the final product. The iPhone 3GS was released around the same time as the first Pre, crushing any chance for the Pre to make that all important positive launch splash.

A'dieu, Palm.
